MyHeart4Him-Potholder-sewing

Another potholder for my homemade collection

Janet of Jan’s Art Friendzy sent me a “From My House to Yours” potholder (Potholder Pass 9).  Don’t you love good mail days?  Thank you Janet for such beautiful potholders.  My kitchen is blessed.

BTW, my kitchen looks AWESOME!!!

MyHeart4Him-Mug-Rug-owl

Find: Future Owl Mug Rugs

I lucked out at our local thrift store and found a bunch of vintage linens.

I immediately loaded up my new vintage stash and headed to Jo-Ann’s to purchase coordinating fabrics.  I think this will be a Mug Rug.  Wait till you see what I whip up.

MyHeart4Him-toy-doll

Precious Toy Dolls

When I was in middle school, my entire grade trekked to Six Flags in Atlanta, GA.  My parents, who were poor most of my childhood, gave me walking around money.  For a souvenir, I purchased a wooden dutch lady sitting in a wooden swing.  She was made in East Germany and had a brightly painted full skirt and stick arms.  She would swing back and forth when I gave her a push with my finger.

I had (and still have) a very active imagination. I would hold her and enjoy the smooth tactile feel of her wooden skirt while daydreaming.  I’m still a daydreamer.

Fast forward to adulthood.  An acquaintance brought his children to my home. I was devastated when one of his children broke (on purpose!!!) my little doll.  I kept my cool and hid my distress, after all kids are kids.  Right?

I couldn’t bear to look at my broken doll, so I packed her away.  Out of sight…

Ten or more years later, I found my doll and her swing packed away in a box of memories. I displayed the pieces in my china cabinet, but was broken-hearted each time I passed by and saw the broken doll.  My little doll ive in my china cabinet for another year.

Last week, I glue and patched my little doll.  After a 5 minute patch job and 24 hours of drying time, I had a perfectly fine wooden doll to enjoy – AGAIN!!!!

Lesson.  If something is broken, but can be fixed; fix it right away.  Years of distress and anguish over nothing is silly.

MyHeart4Him-my-bible-and-i-poem

Find: Ephemera

I love thrift stores, garage sale and estate sales. I can hardly pass one without stopping and treasure hunt. In my earlier years, I wanted to be an archeologist. This probably would have been a good career for me, but so would antique store picker and hoarder. haha

When I found this envelope stuffed with goodies, I knew I had a treasure on my hands. The sweet poem reads:

My Bible and I
(John 3:33 and Psalm 119)

We’ve traveled together,
   My Bible and I,
Through all kinds of weather,
   With smile or with sigh!
In sorrow or in sunshine,
   In tempest or calm!
Thy friendship unchanging,
   My lamp and my psalm.

We’ve traveled together,
   My Bible and I,
When life had grown weary,
   And death e’en was nigh!
But all through the darkness
of mist or of wrong,
I found there a solace,
A prayer, and a song.

So now who shall part us,
My Bible and I?
Shall “isms” or schisms,
Or “new lights” who try?
Shall shadow for substance,
Or stone for good break,
Supplant thy soured wisdom,
Give folly instead?

Ah, no, my dear Bible,
Exponent of light!
Thou sword fo the spirit,
Put error to flight!
And still through life’s journey,
Until my last sigh,
We’ll travel together,
My bible and I.

-Charles Sandford

Over the next few weeks, I will continue to post about the other bits of paper in this envelope.

Find: Ephemera – One Lost Day

A week or so ago, I purchased an envelope of ephemera from the estate of Ms. Daphne Hudson. Enjoy.

Found – One Lost Day

GOING B ACK IN TIME. Those who wrestle with the space program and doubts about an Almighty, might find some consolation in this article, reprinted from the Spencer, Indiana Star. Harold Hill, president of Curtis Engine Co. in Baltimore, and a consultant in the space program relates the following development:

I think one of the most amazing things that God has for us today happened recently to our astronauts and space scientist at Green Belt, Maryland. They were checking the position of the sun, moon and planets, out in space where they would be in 100 years and 1,000 years from now. We have to know this so we don’t send a satellite up and have it bump into something later on in its orbit. We have to lay out the orbits in terms of life of the satellite, and where the planets will be so the whole think will not bog down. They ran the computer measurement back and forth over the centuries and it came to a halt. They computer stopped and put up a red signal, which meant that there was something wrong either with the information fed into it or with the results as compared to the standards. They called in the service department to check it and they said, “It’s perfect.” The heads of operation said, “What’s wrong?” “Well, they have found there is a day missing in space in elapsed time.” They scratched their heads and tore their hair. There was no answer.

One religious fellow on the team said, “You know, one time I was in Sunday School and they talked about the sun standing still.” They didn’t believe him, but they didn’t have any other answer so they said, “Show us.” He got a Bible and went back to the book of Joshua where they found what they thought was a pretty ridiculous statement for anybody who has ‘common sense.’ There they found the Lord saying to Joshua, “Fear them not; for I have delivered them into thine hand; there shall not a man stand before thee.” Joshua was concerned because he was surrounded by the enemy and if darkness fell they would overpower them. So Joshua asked the Lord to make the sun stand still. That’s right, “The sun stood still, and the moon stayed… and hasted not to go down about a whole day.” They checked the computers going back into the time it was written and found it was close but not close enough. The elapsed time that was missing back in Joshua’s day was 23 hours and 20 minutes – not a whole day. They read the Bible and there it was “about (approximately) a day.”

There little words in the Bible are important. But they were still in trouble because if you cannot account for 40 minutes you’ll still be in trouble 1,000 years from now. Forty minutes had to be found because it can multiplied many times over on orbits. This religious fellow also remembered somewhere in the Bible where it said the sun went backwards. The space men told him he was out of his mind. But they got out the Book and read their words in II Kings: Hezekiah on his death-bed, was visited by the prophet Isaiah who told him that he was not going to die. Hezekiah asked for a sign as proof. Isaiah said, “Do you want the sun to go ahead ten degrees?” Hezekiah said, “It is nothing for the sun to go ahead ten degrees, but let the shadow return backwards ten degrees.” (II Kings 20:9-11) Isaiah spoke to the Lord and the Lord brought the shadow ten degrees backward. Ten degrees is exactly forty minutes. Twenty three hours and 20 minutes in Joshua and 40 minutes in II Kings make the missing day in the universe.

There is no date on this document, but my best guess it that it was typed in the 70s.  I decided to check Snopes and found this.

Rainbow Floss Box

After seeing Gigi & Big Red’s Rainbow Floss Box, I had to make my own.  The tin (ugly!!!) is from Mom.  While the tin is not my style (super ugly), it is large enough to hold most of my floss.  I want to paint it, but…. really, it’s fine the way it is (ugly)!!!  Go gather your floss, find a pretty (or ugly) box and start winding.  Leave a comment with a link to your picture.  I would love to see your collection.

Make: Inchies

A few years back, I picked up a child’s alphabet toy from the thrift store.  The toy had many flippy windows that housed an alphabet game.  I brought it home, painted it, and then make little one inch collages for each window.  Below is a scan of each collage, before I inserted the original into the window.  I’m not sure what happened to the “toy,” but I was delighted to find my printed copy of the scan.

My two favorites are the red one (woman holding watermelon) on top row and the Lady in aqua dress on the bottom row.  Maybe I should make on of these my favicon

MyHeart4Him-tutorial-handmade-collage-envelope

Tutorial: Collaged Handmade Envelope

Thank you for all the kind comments about my homemade, fancied-up, envelopes.  Don’t you love getting “good” mail?  I do and I love to send it, too.  Follow these steps to make your own Fabu-licious decoupage envelope.

What you need:
Decoupage Envie

  • Scissors (best tool EVER!)
  • Either a Cricit (and cartridges) and/or Rubber Stamps and/or Stencils
  • Ephemera - Don’t you love that word?
  • Matte Medium
  • Kraft paper (can be grocery bags.  Does anyone use brown paper bag anymore???)
  • Assorted papers – Don’t try to “match” papers!  Look for contrast.  Try to choose light, medium and dark papers.
  • Rubber Stamps & Ink – not required
  • Sewing Machine w/ colorful thread
  • Decorative Scissors

Steps

1.  Cut your kraft paper into two generous square/rectangle shapes.  You will want this to be 5 inches or larger than the desired envelope size.

Decoupage Envie

2.  Using your Cricut, begin cutting elements.  I like to cut elements that do not require layers to look nice.  I usually will cut all sorts of shapes on one sheet of 12X12 scrapbook paper.  Any unused elements are added to a folder of leftovers for my next project.    Below is an example of what I cut from the green paper.  If you do not have a Cricit, use your rubber stamps/stencils to make image and then free hand cut out.

Decoupage Envie

3.  Continue cutting elements until you have a nice pile to choose from.
Decoupage EnvieDecoupage Envie

4.  Let’s get messy.  If you have nicely manicured nails, now is a good time to put on protective gloves.  Me?  I just get dirty!  Pour out a puddle of matte medium and spread it out with your fingers.  (I’ve tried using brushes, but I prefer to use my favorite tool – my hands).  I usually keep a 1 or 2 inch margin dry, just so I will have something to hold onto later.  Remember, that is why we cut an extra large margin!
Decoupage Envie

5. On top of the base layer of matte medium, start laying down elements in a manner pleasing to your eye.  Don’t forget your ephemera.  Then, apply matte medium on top of the element.

6.  Once you are happy with your collage, apply one additional layer of matte medium on top of the collage, to insure everything is adhered to the background.

7.  I hang my wet collages from pants hangers to dry.  Overnight is fine, but in a rush I’ve hung it outside in the sunshine.

Decoupage Envie

8.  When dry, stack the collage on top of the second square/rectangle of kraft paper.  You are ready to sew!  At this time, you can add additional images with your rubber stamps.  For this project, I did not, but I usually do!

Collaged Handmade Envies

9.  At your sewing machine, choose long, straight stitch.  I changed my stitch length to 4.5, but 5.0 would have been better.  Choose a longer stitch length over a shorter one, because a shorter stitch might perforate the paper.

10.  Begin stitching a rectangle-ish shape around the envelope.  Make sure you have room for your desired contents!!!

Collaged Handmade Envies

11.  As you stitch around the envelope, remember to place your items inside the envelope.  Once you sew it up, you can’t add anything else!!!!

Collaged Handmade Envies

12.  Sew around your envelope at least three times.  All the stitch lines look nice, plus it adds extra strength to the envelope.

Collaged Handmade Envies
13.  Trim the edges with decorative scissors.  Leave a generous margin between the stitch line and your cutting line.

 Collaged Handmade Envies

14.  When done, you have an awesome envelope.  Add the mailing address (I suggest using a Sharpie, paint pen or mailing label).

Make: Blogger’s Quilt Festival!

This quilt started out as an experiment.  But, each step turned out so nice, I kept going.  I am so glad I did.  I think it turned out lovely.

004

The background is “water colored” with rubber stamp ink mixed with Aloe Vera Gel.  Once the back ground was dry, I ironed it, then washed out the gel.   Then, I added highlights and shadows with Crayola crayons.  I ironed it again to set the colors.

I free motioned on top to add texture.  I’ve only free motioned a few times and I still haven’t gotten the hang of it.  It is much harder than it looks!  But, practice makes perfect.  All that was left was the bind and add embellishments.  The crochet pansies is from an old doily.  I am especially fond of the iron on jewels.  I hope you enjoy my entry into the Blogger’s Quilt Festival.

Tutorial: Decorative Plate {Silhouette chair with colorful pillows}

I’m a big fan of Lettering Delights and a happy customer since 2004.  This month, they are hosting a contest to use any of their products in a home decor project.  I immediately thought of my DB Good Company font.

DB-good-company-font

I thought about many home decor projects, but since I’ve been looking for a pretty decorative plate for my mantle, I quickly settled on a plate?

What you need:

  • MS-Word (or Word Processor of your choice)
  • Plate (I used a white Corelle plate)
  • DB Good Company Font from Lettering Delights
  • School glue
  • Paint (I used black shiny paint)
  • Sharpie pen (fine tip – I used brown)
  • Dry erase marker
  • Spray temporary adhesive (I used Sulky brand)
  • Colorful fabric scraps for pillows

1.   In MS Word (or the word processor of your choice), enlarge the font to 450 pts.  Print.

template

2.  Compare print out to size of plate.  Enlarge or reduce size of font, as necessary.

template

3.  Cut out silhouette.

template

4.  Spay back of silhouette with temporary spray adhesive.  Stick silhouette to plate (be sure to center your design) and trace with sharpie pen.

template template outline

5.  Remove silhouette shape and discard.

Sharpie outline

6.  Paint inside the silhouette with paint.  Be careful to stay within the lines.

7.  Allow your plate to dry in a safe place!!!

8.  After the plate is dry, use a dry erase marker to remove sharpie pen lines.   Wipe away dry erase pen marks.

9.  Cut pillow shapes from fabric scraps.

Hint #1:  rounded shapes look more pillow-like, than squares

Hint #2:  use thick fabric or darker colors, as the fabric turns transparent when glued down!! Ask me how I know?!?!

10.  Glue down pillow shapes.   Apply glue to both sides of the fabric.

11.  Coat again with glue to make sure it is fully adhered.

12.  And, behold my plates are done.  I really like them.  I hope you enjoy this project as much as me!!!

I ran across this giant plastic, zipper bag and knew I needed it for my art class.  I tote 3 bags to and from class, because I can’t find a large enough bag to hold everything.  I was so happy to stumble across this beauty.  While I like the bag, the colors aren’t my taste.  I remembered I had some plastic paint (thank you, stash!!), so I got busy.

Before long, I had a modded bag just for me.  Cute, yes?

Phix Energy Drink

PhixI applied through Mom Select to sample the new Phix Energy Drink powder.  Happily, I was accepted.  Just a few weeks later, I received free 3 boxes of Phix Energy Drink single server packets in the mail.  What is Phix you say?

Well, Phix Energy is a sophisticated energy drink mix and herbal supplement blending green tea anti-oxidants, energy-restoring NADH and Yerba Maté for enhanced vigor, with added vitamins and minerals to keep you feeling healthy. Their all-natural energy drinks give an immediate lift, but unlike other energy drink mix products, there are no spikes, jitters, or crashes. Phix powders are natural, vegan, and gluten-free and come in 3 delicious flavors: Citron, Tropic, and Teaberry.

I received Teaberry and Citron.  My family was so happy.  Until…..

We tried it.  My children refused to drink it.  My husband will drink it, but only if water is his only other option.  The taste is… off.  It is not terrible, but far from delicious.  Sadly, I did not notice any energy boast.  Thank you Phix, for allowing to try your product.  Sadly, it did not work out for me or my family.

To learn more about Phix, see:

If you are interested in sampling a 1 month subscription to Phix, please leave a comment.  I will randomly select a commenter on Dec 15.  You will be sent 3 boxes of any flavor and a 25% off coupon for a future purchase.  Good luck!!!

Something Borrowed by Emily Giffin REVIEW #6

As the weather is getting hotter and hotter (after all, I live in FL), I craved chic lit.  I purchased Something Borrowed at our local grocery store (which as a fabulous book section).   I was unsure, but happily surprised.

something-borrowed

Buy the book from Amazon

From Amazon.

The smash-hit debut novel for every woman who has ever had a complicated love-hate friendship.

Rachel White is the consummate good girl. A hard-working attorney at a large Manhattan law firm and a diligent maid of honor to her charmed best friend Darcy, Rachel has always played by all the rules. Since grade school, she has watched Darcy shine, quietly accepting the sidekick role in their lopsided friendship. But that suddenly changes the night of her thirtieth birthday when Rachel finally confesses her feelings to Darcy’s fiance, and is both horrified and thrilled to discover that he feels the same way. As the wedding date draws near, events spiral out of control, and Rachel knows she must make a choice between her heart and conscience. In so doing, she discovers that the lines between right and wrong can be blurry, endings aren’t always neat, and sometimes you have to risk everything to be true to yourself.

This new tie-in edition will coincide with the release of the film, starring Kate Hudson, Ginnifer Goodwin and John Krasinski.

I am so glad I read this.  After reading the book cover, I wasn’t so sure.  Afterall, who wants to read about someone cheating on someone else?  evidentially, I do.  the main character, Rachel, is so likeable and her best friend, “the engaged before 30 ” Darcy is so…. unlikable.  Before long, I was hoping Rachel would end up with the love of her life.  There were many laugh out loud moments.  I can’t wait to see the movie (but PLEASE read the book first.  The book is ALWAYS better!!!  If you haven’t yet read Something Borrowed, read it now.
